Need to know Friday: Small businesses using videos effectively

Small business week is right around the corner. As the focus starts to pivot to small businesses at the end of May, topics like social media, marketing, investing, funding, credit, hiring, growth and jobs will also be put under a microscope. Each and every facet of the "small business life" will be examined as everyone takes a week to appreciate the small business owners in our lives.

A few of those topics crept up this week, including where small business hiring and revenues stand, how they are potentially using video to market their business and how they can better manage their finances. These are just some of the stories you should be looking at this week.

Small business revenues are creeping up: According to survey data released this month by Intuit, small businesses are starting to get back to revenues seen "pre-recession" which is being seen as good news overall. Average revenue is up 9.5% since the recovery began, according to the data, but Scott Shane argues that while the numbers are strong, they need to be much higher to make up the hit small businesses took as a result of the recession.

Videos being embraced by small businesses: It's a medium that the small business group hasn't been able to crack - at least in large numbers - just yet. There have been some outliers (Dollar Shave Club comes to mind) but overall, video has been a difficult thing for small business owners to master. StartupSmart took a look at 10 online videos that have been on YouTube that any small business can learn from. My personal favorite is Valencia Property, which offers simple and honest tips for buying homes in Spain.

Growth, but no hiring: Hiring numbers continue to be low for small businesses, as it's obvious based on a number of surveys that while many are considering adding headcount, the overall economy is just too volatile to take the risk. Inside this story by the Associated Press, real small businesses talk about what's holding them back, why it doesn't make sense, and what the future looks like. Do these stories sound familiar to yours?

Tax season's over, financial management isn't: We all know tax season is the time of year where millions go scrambling to find receipts, remember how much they paid for something, and really take a look at what came in versus what went out. Few are as diligent about their finances as they should be in the small business world. But inside this Mashable piece are some practical tips on how to better manage your fiances throughout the year.
