Getting an extension

If you won't be able to finish your taxes, even with the new deadlines, you can always file for an extension.

But getting an extension doesn't put off paying Uncle Sam if you think you will owe taxes. So expect to pay your taxes today, even if you haven't filed your return, in order to avoid interest charges or a possible penalty.

To get a federal extension until Oct. 15, use form 4868, downloadable at irs.gov. Taxpayers can go to the IRS website or call 1-800-829-1040 to get answers on last-minute questions.

Massachusetts taxpayers can generally get a six-month state extension with form M-4868 at mass.gov/dor. For help, call 800-392-6089 or 617-887-6367 from out of state.
