PIERRE, S.D.—South Dakotans in a year will vote on a sales tax increase to boost education and Medicaid funding.

Secretary of State Jason Gant on Wednesday said supporters of the proposal submitted more than enough valid petition signatures to get the measure on the November 2012 general election ballot. It will appear on the ballot as Initiated Measure 15.

The measure would raise the state's sales tax from 4 percent to 5 percent. The additional 1 percent would raise an estimated $180 million, with half going to K-12 education and half to Medicaid funding.
