How do I deduct an IRA as a housewife?

Q: I am a housewife with no income. My husband has a 401K which he contributes the maximum. Am I able to deduct an IRA in my name? - Robin, Sharon

The following answer was provided by William Colangeli CPA, O'Malley & Colangeli CPAs PC, Bedford.

A: Although you don't have any earned income, you are still permitted to make a contribution to an IRA under the 'spousal' IRA rules. Whether or not the contribution will be deductible depends on your joint income for the tax year, assuming you are filing jointly.
