10. Help paying health insurance premiums for some
The Health Coverage Tax Credit, or HCTC, pays 80 percent of health insurance premiums for those who qualify, such as those who receive pension payments from the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) or those who receive trade readjustment allowances.
You can either claim your credit when you file your federal tax return or you can register with the HCTC program to access your credit in advance to help you pay for health-insurance premiums as they become due.
For health care expenses incurred before May 1, 2009, or after Dec. 31, 2010, the credit drops to 65 percent on certain types of health insurance. The credit is 80 percent for expenses incurred between May 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2010.
