What can happen if you don't file your taxes?

Your refund can pay off last year's taxes.
If you owe tax from last year and file this year, the refund you receive can be offset to pay the previous taxes. That refund can also be applied directly to pay government loans, like Stafford college loans and owed state taxes.
If there's still a difference, after the offset, it will be sent to the taxpayer.
