TECH TRANSITION: After working on the project for seven years, Oracle unveiled a new line-up of business software applications that will be distributed over the Internet. The concept, known as ‘‘cloud computing,’’ is a departure from Oracle’s traditional method of installing software programs on individual computers in offices.
THE IMPETUS: Oracle CEO Larry Ellison realized his 35-year-old company needed to adapt to the cloud-computing trend or risk becoming a relic.
THE CHALLENGE: As it heads in a new direction, Oracle Corp. still can’t afford to neglect its old sales model that generates most of its $37 billion in annual revenue.![]()
