Instapaper: For $4.99, this app takes all the ads and widgets from an article you’re trying to read, and formats it nicely on your tablet so you can read it anywhere. Since it downloads the article onto your tablet, you can read it even without Internet access.

Walking Dead: The Game: What’s cooler than The Walking Dead on TV? The Walking Dead everywhere you go. Fight off terrifying zombies and scare yourself silly with this enthralling game.

Wikipanion: With an easy, seamless format for swift navigation, the iPad’s “Wikipanion” makes quick-checking those sports references even easier. There’s a table of contents browser, image saving to iPhoto library when needed, and a history listing. And it’s free.

Fruit Ninja: Pieces of fruit pop up on the screen. You run your finger over them, and suddenly your finger is a sword, slicing all of the pieces of fruit in half and leaving them dripping with juices. For $2.99, what could be cooler?

Flipboard: Flipboard takes your Twitter feeds and Facebook feeds (and many other news sources) and turns them into your own constantly updating magazine. The award-winning app really takes advantage of the readability on the iPad.

Epicurious: Search thousands of recipes that are organized by types of meals and ingredients. Also, create a shopping list, so you don’t forget meal ideas when you’re on the go. If you like to cook, this is definitely worth checking out.

Star Walk: Curious what constellations may be over head? Or where the planets are in the night sky? This app allows you to hold the iPad up to the sky and see these all labeled for you. Also, it allows you to search for objects in the sky.

Angry Birds: At some point, you’re going to get bored with just learning on your iPad, and you’re going to want some mindless fun. The perfect way to pass some time is with Angry Birds. The game is simple, toss some birds across the screen and hit stuff. You’ll amazed at the amount of time you’ll pass with this app.

Fantastic 4 In a Row: Who doesn’t love a good game of Connect Four? This isn’t an official game of Connect Four from your childhood, but who cares? It has all the fun of the game.

ClearTune: Need to tune a guitar or find what pitch you’re on? This app is great for finding exactly where you are on the scale. It works in real time, so you can go up and down in pitch until you hit the mark.

Google Earth: Tour the world from your new tablet. This is the app for people who want to really interact with maps. Zoom in and out on landmarks and anywhere in the world. It’s the kind of app that will keep your attention for hours.

Martha Stewart Cookies: Into making cookies or just staring at photos of them? This is the app for you. The app comes with a sleek navigation and 60 recipes (with the option to buy more).

Photoshop Express: Don’t get too excited thinking this is a full-on version of Photoshop. It’s far from it. But, really, this is your iPad, not a desktop computer for photo editing. The simplicity of the app’s options—basic cropping, lighting, and rotating—is what makes this app great.

StockTouch: Sure, you can just look at the stock tickers for what’s happening in the markets. But this lets you break down different sectors—like tech—and see by color variations what’s going on. It also gives great historical information on stocks.

Mint.com: This app helps you keep track of all your finances in a series of graphs and alerts. Curious if you’re going overbudget on food? This will give you some handy-dandy notifications.

Draw Something: Think of this app as “Win, Lose, or Draw” taken to the next level. You earn points by drawing a keyword for your friends, who then have to guess what your scribblings are. You get points on how fast the drawing is figured out, and how fast you can guess other drawings.

ColorBox: Drawing on paper is so last year. This app gives you pens, pencils, highlighters, and other tools to make your newest art projects come to life.

OnLive: The iPad does a pretty good imitation of a laptop computer, especially when you combine it with an external keyboard. But sometimes it’d be nice to fire up our old friend Microsoft Office. A free app called OnLive Desktop gives you cloud-based access to Office, running on a remote Windows 7 computer. Learn more

Kindle: Amazon is a giant in the electronic books arena. Download and read any book, magazine, or newspaper electronically available from the store with this free app. The app syncs with other devices you’re accessing the books from—including a Kindle device or your phone.

Zite: Zite tries to find the news you’re looking for and serves that up to you in a nice, sleek display. Where Flipboard gives you content you direct into it, Zite sees what you read and suggests items you may be interested in.

Pandora: Pandora lets you make your own radio stations. Enter in your favorite songs and artists, and the app gives you songs that match your taste. Thumb up or down the system’s picks to better tailor what you get.

Netflix: Stream and watch hundreds of TV shows and movies via this app. Stop any at point and pick back up when you have a moment.

Weather Channel: Are you a weather data geek? Want to know the latest on alerts in your area or where you may travel? This app is for you. Get cool interactive features and reports on wherever you’re interested in.
