The Street took a step backward. Then a tiny step forward. Then back. It all amounted to little change. Major US stock indexes ended Wednesday just below where they were Tuesday. Stocks remained down for the week, extending the sharp downturn for the year so far. Markets started the week with a 326-point drop in the Dow, triggered by disappointing manufacturing data. Leery investors are waiting to see if economic reports and company earnings show the economic recovery is on track. ‘It’s a market looking for direction,’ said Rex Macey, at Wilmington Trust Investment Advisors.
