On my own blog over at Get Moving, I’ve talked at length about how I’d love to have buff arms like Michelle Obama.

And since seeing a clip of her on the Ellen Degeneres show doing many push-ups in a row, I decided I want to improve my ability to do the exercise.

At most, I can do 10 in a row (although my form starts to slack and by the end I tend to feel like my biceps are made of pudding).

So I scoured the Google Play store for a push-up app, and let me tell you there were plenty to choose from.

There are push-up apps where you crush little men by hitting your nose on your phone screen. (I have enough nose smudges on my screen from my toddler, so that one was out.) Others simply have a timer to see how many push-ups you can crank out in a certain amount of time.

I finally settled on this app by Rittr Labs that coaches you through reaching your push-up goal.

When first setting up the app, you plug in your goal (mine was to be able to do 50 push-ups in a row; you can choose 75, 100, or even 125). After setting your goal, you then type in how many pushups you can do until you feel completely exhausted (in my case, that was 10.) The app then creates a workout consisting of sets of push-ups and periods of rest.

For example, my first workout had me do 5 push-ups, then rest for 60 seconds; then 4 push-ups, and 60 seconds of rest; then 6 push-ups and rest, and finally, 5 push-ups, and rest. My push-up total for that workout was 20.

After each workout, the app asks you if the workout was too easy, just right, or too hard. Based on that feedback, it will adjust your next workout accordingly.

I really enjoy this app, although the whistle that blows to cue you to begin each segment of push-ups reminds me of middle school gym class. The feedback button at the end of a session is great.

My only complaint is that I’d love some music integrated with the app. I did try it with the music on my phone running in the background; that worked just fine, and it didn't crash anything.

This app may not give me Michelle Obama’s arms, but it sure can’t hurt.
