WASHINGTON - In a YouTube video, Ken and Barbie dolls are joining calls by high-profile Democrats for a federal product safety official to resign.
Members of Congress, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, have asked Nancy Nord, acting chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, to quit.
In the video, shot and posted by a liberal advocacy group, Campaign for America's Future, Ken and Barbie dolls meet at a bar and go back to Barbie's Dream House. Fast-forward a week, and Barbie complains to Ken that she is "having some symptoms." When Ken asks what's wrong, she answers, "It's lead poisoning."
The video is to remind consumers that Barbie doll accessories were among the 2 million toys Mattel Inc. recalled this year because they contained potentially toxic levels of lead paint.
The video claims Nord opposes congressional proposals to dedicate more resources to the CPSC and has taken "expensive trips paid for by the toy industry," which Nord has defended.![]()
