NEW YORK—Shares of construction and engineering companies retreated from a strong start to finish mixed in Monday's session, as the broader market edged lower following a spike in oil prices and Microsoft Corp.'s withdrawal of a bid for Yahoo Inc.

Here's how some shares of construction and engineering companies fared:

Emcor Group Inc., down 6 cents to $25.91.

Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., off 41 cents to $38.98.

Fluor Corp., up $5.17, or 3.4 percent, to $157.99.

Foster Wheeler Ltd., up $1.26, or 2 percent, to $64.63.
