SAN JOSE, Calif.—Chip design company Tessera Technologies Inc. on Wednesday named board member Henry Nothhaft as its new president and chief executive officer.

Tessera's former president and CEO Bruce McWilliams said he will become the chief strategy officer and remain chairman of the company's board of directors.

Nothhaft has served on Tessera's board since 2004, and became vice chairman in April, the company said. He has been CEO of a number of small technology companies -- including Danger Inc., a wireless software and services company that Microsoft bought earlier this year, and Concentric Network Corp., which merged in 1999 with NextLink to create XO Communications.

Tessera shares rose 16 cents to $18.97 in afternoon trading.
