Keeping your computer safe

Worried about the Conficker worm? Here's how to protect your Windows computer:
Set your machine to automatically install the latest Windows patches and updates. This will prevent Conficker from entering your computer through the Internet.
Install an antivirus program, run it regularly, and keep it current by downloading updates from the Internet. Most broadband Internet providers offer free antivirus programs on their websites.
Conficker can be spread through infected USB drives or removable disks. Turn off the autoplay feature in Windows so these devices won't be activated immediately when inserted. Also scan the drives or disks with antivirus software.
If your machine is already infected, Conficker may block access to antivirus sites. You must run a Conficker removal program, available from Microsoft and most antivirus companies. Download the program on an uninfected machine and copy it to a CD or USB drive. Then install and run it on the infected machine.
