Carbonite in marketing deal with Sun
Carbonite Inc. of Boston, which sells an Internet-based computer backup service for consumers, is getting a major marketing boost from Sun Microsystems Inc., maker of the popular Java software system.
Computer users who download new Java software or upgrade their existing software will be given the chance to sign up for a 30-day free trial of Carbonite, which sells unlimited backups of home computer data for about $55 a year.
Java software is found on about 800 million personal computers worldwide to run a variety of multimedia programs, including games and video services.
Carbonite founder David Friend said the deal with Sun offers his company a major growth opportunity. “We’ve been working on it for a long time,’’ said Friend. “It’s a very valuable deal.’’
Carbonite, a small, venture-backed start-up, competes against the MozyHome service offered by data storage giant EMC Corp. of Hopkinton. ![]()
