The city of Newburyport and an energy services company, Ameresco Inc., are unveiling a solar power system today they say is the largest municipal project of its kind in Massachusetts.

It will supply 502 kilowatts of electricity - enough to power about 70 homes - to Nock Middle School and the Department of Public Works building.

Ameresco, based in Framingham, designed and built the system and will own, operate, and maintain it over the next 20 years.

Commonwealth Solar Program, a state-run effort to accelerate the number of solar power projects, has contributed $1.6 million to the project.

The project will also provide an educational opportunity for students at the school.

An LCD panel has been placed in the school, and software will send weather and solar power production data to the Internet for use in the school’s classrooms.
