NEW YORK - Nokia, the world’s largest maker of cellphones, is suing Apple Inc. in federal court, saying the popular iPhone uses patented wireless technologies.

Nokia Corp. claims the iPhone infringes on 10 patents covering both cellphone calls and wireless Internet access.

The company also says 40 other cellphone manufacturers have licensed these patents from Nokia, but Apple hasn’t.

A representative from Apple didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment yesterday.

Companies that develop cellphone technology regularly sue each other over patents. The usual outcome is that the defendant agrees to pay licensing fees, or the parties agree to share each other’s patents.

The suit was filed in US District Court in Wilmington, Del.
