SAN FRANCISCO—Hewlett-Packard Co. is planning a subscription delivery service for its lucrative printer ink.

The company said Wednesday that buyers could save up to 50 percent off the price of their printer ink with the monthly subscription. H-P ink has been compared with oil for its high price, but H-P's market share is being challenged by cheaper, generic ink.

The Palo Alto-based company plans to charge $5.99 to $10.99 per month for the ink subscriptions. The prices include shipping. The program is slated to be rolled out on a trial basis this fall. H-P did not provide more details about pricing.

H-P appears to be hoping that people will use more ink if they're receiving it automatically instead of buying cartridges individually. H-P ink cartridges can cost $20 or more each.
