Robert Tappan Morris
Crime: Creator of the first computer worm released on the Internet -- the "Morris Worm" -- in the 1980s when he was an undergraduate student at Cornell University. The worm slowed down an estimated 6,000 computers to the point where they couldnt be used anymore.
Sentence: Three years of probation, 400 hours of community service, and a $10,500 fine.
Status: Professor at the MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
