Customers have long clamored for the ability to run multiple applications at once on the iPhone. The new operating system will let them do so by keeping certain functions of an app running even when it's not open.
This means users can keep Pandora open and playing music in the background while they work on another app, or let Flickr finish an upload without having to stay in the app.
Multitasking will only work on iPhone 3GS models, third-generation iPod touch models, and the iPad. It will not work on earlier versions of the iPhone or iPod Touch.
