Here is some advice on making your parents proud: when you throw the party to celebrate the publication of your first book, invite them... and invite the governor to stop by and say some nice things about the role you and your venture capital firm play in the Massachusetts economy.

Gov. Deval Patrick stopped by Microsoft NERD tonight, at the shindig marking the launch of Jeffrey Bussgang's "Mastering the VC Game." (Bussgang works at Boston's Flybridge Capital Partners.) He joked that many of the people who buy Bussgang's $25 book will one day hit him up for an investment....and also thanked party host Microsoft for adding new jobs in the state, especially before his upcoming election in November.

Here's who I saw at the party:

Rob Go (left), freshly departed from his senior associate gig at Spark Capital...MIT prof Howard Anderson...Michelle Dipp of Sirtris/GlaxoSmithKline and managing partner Christian Bailey of IncTank Ventures...Juan Enriquez of Biotechnomy...Maggie Pax of MicroCHIPs...Bilal Zuberi of General Catalyst and Dayna Grayson from North Bridge...Don McLagan, noted poet and member of the MITX board of directors...Udi Meirav of Stata Venture Partners and Jo Tango of Kepha Partners...Amit Kanodia of Lincoln Ventures...reporter/editor/blogger Dan Primack of peHUB...tech lawyer Bill Schnoor from Goodwin Procter...Eric Paley of Founder Collective...Oneforty founder Laura Fitton and Jason Evanish of Oneforty and Greenhorn Connect...and general counsel Winston Henderson of SurfaceLogix. (All of Bussgang's partners from Flybridge were present, too, of course.)

Here's Lucy McQuilken of Intel Capital with Greg Raiz of Raizlabs:
