EMC kicked off its annual customer conference last night with a private concert by 1990s hit-meisters Counting Crows; the show was "sponsored by EMC Recovery and Backup Solutions," which I guess subtly underscores the notion that if you're not using EMC's data backup technology, you might be forced to go back to floppy-disk copies of your information made in 1994, when "Round Here" was climbing the charts.

EMC World brings about 8000 EMC customers and business partners to town (including representatives from Cisco, Dell, Intel, Oracle, and Microsoft), but all the keynote speakers are EMC bigwigs, including Joe Tucci, Pat Gelsinger (hired last fall from Intel) and Howard Elias. This year's big theme? Cloud-based services, of course.

The conference agenda is here, and the event's Twitter stream is here.
