EMC Corp. is pressing ahead with its strategy of building a formidable research and development operation in Israel, announcing today that it acquired ProActivity Software Solutions Ltd., a Newton company with a software development office in Netanya, Israel.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

The deal brings to three the number of companies with Israeli research and development arms that EMC has swallowed recently, and increases the company's work force there by 12 people. ProActivity, now part of the EMC Software Group, makes software that monitors how efficiently their sales, marketing, human resources and other processes are functioning.

EMC, headquartered in Hopkinton, is the world's biggest maker of storage computers and software. It also is the second-largest public company in Massachusetts, with a market value of $28.4 billion.

EMC bought San Jose-based Kaysha Inc. for $153 million in May. Last week it bought nLayers Inc., also of San Jose, for an undisclosed amount. In both cases, EMC added the companies' Israeli research arms to its portfolio.

At 10:30 a.m., EMC shares were trading at $11.74, down 27 cents, on the New York Stock Exchange.
