Employees of Sun Microsystems could have a nerve-racking day ahead of them as the company is expected to proceed with another round of layoffs on Thursday, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Sun, which has about 2,000 workers at its Burlington campus, has already cut 13,000 jobs since 2001 as it tries to save cash. The layoffs are not unexpected; Sun has said it will cut its global workforce of 37,500 people by between 11 percent and 13 percent, or 4,000 to 5,000 employees over the next six months.

That move alone will cost the company $340 million to $500 million in restructuring costs, most of which will be recorded in the quarter that ends this month. Still, Sun says the overall restructuring will save it between $480 million and $590 million every year.

Sun spokeswoman Stephanie Hess said that she could not confirm whether layoffs would be announced on tomorrow, and that she did not know how many job cuts will come from Sun's operations in Massachusetts.
