Sprint Nextel Corp., a provider of wireline and wireless communications, said today it has just invested $35 million in enhancements to both the Sprint PCS Nationwide Network and the Nextel National Network in the Boston area.

The upgrades are a result of additional wireless cell sites and equipment that add coverage and network capacity, the company said.

Among the neighborhoods and communities that should benefit from improvements to the Sprint PCS Network are Framingham, Quincy, Roxbury, and Somerville.

A list of places that see improvements in the Nextel network are Braintree, Leominster, and Medford.

The company "is constantly looking for ways to improve the customer experience in Boston and throughout the country," said John Diefenbach, area vice president for Sprint's New England area in a statement.

On the New York Stock Exchange, company shares fell 51 cents to close at $19.93.
