Mark Maloney, head of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, to retire
Mark Maloney will retire in January as the director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, the city of Boston's planning and economic development agency, BRA officials said today.
Maloney held the position for nearly seven years, longer than any other BRA director except for Stephen Coyle, who led the agency during the administration of former Mayor Raymond L. Flynn, BRA officials said.
Maloney will continue to advise current Mayor Thomas M. Menino on national and international development matters, BRA officials said.
Before Maloney took over the BRA, he headed Maloney Properties, which managed low-income housing and other properties.
Maloney, 55, earned $164,088 as director.
In remarks to his staff, Maloney noted that his tenure included such highlights as helping Menino create an affordable housing initiative called "Leading the Way" and developing comprehensive strategic plans for such city neighborhoods as Dorchester, Mattapan, and North Allston.
Maloney also said the city is poised for the revitalization of Dudley Square and the opening of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway as city government looks to move City Hall to a new location on the South Boston Waterfront.
Maloney told staffers that BRA veteran Paul McCann will serve as the agency's acting director during the search for a new director.
