Boston firms earn spots on Fortune's best-places-to-work list
Boston Consulting Group ranked eighth on Fortune magazine's annual ranking of the "100 best companies to work for," a list topped by Google.
About each company, Fortune asked: "What is so great?"
In Boston Consulting's case, Fortune's answer was that employees working more than 60 hours a week are advised by a "career mentor" and that the group has made a big push to hire women.
Another Boston consulting firm that made the list was Bain & Co. (ranked 45). Two law firms with a big Hub presence also stood out: Nixon Peabody (49) and Bingham McCutchen (94).
Others that scored high included the Cambridge biotechnology company Genzyme Corp. (43), New Hampshire boot-and-apparel maker Timberland Co. (78), and Watertown day care provider Bright Horizons (92).
Though not be headquartered in Massachusetts, other familiar names on the list were Whole Foods Market (5), Starbucks (16), commercial real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle (66), and Procter & Gamble (68), the parent company of Gillette.
In a poll conducted by CNNMoney.com in conjunction with today's release of Fortune's list, one finding was that 56 percent of employees would rather have an extra week of vacation time than an extra week's pay.
