Bates College of Maine selected NetScout Systems Inc. to give it a campus-wide network upgrade.

NetScout Systems of Westford, which provides network and application performance-management tools, said today that Bates has chosen its nGenius Solution to drive a 10-year upgrade program; with nGenius, a college can identify the users who are consuming the majority of the organization's overall bandwidth.

"Institutions of higher learning face unique network management challenges," NetScout vice president John Downing said in a statement. "They oversee some of the most open networks and serve demanding users. The nGenius solution allows colleges and universities to identify the new applications that can appear on a campus overnight and identify anomalous traffic patterns that could spell trouble for the mission-critical applications that students and professors depend upon."
