Claros Diagnostics of Woburn has secured $7.8 million in financing to develop a hand-held diagnostic device.

Among other applications, the device would enable a doctor to analyze a blood sample within the timeframe of a patient's office visit, said the company, adding that it will initially focus on developing its diagnostic system for urological cancer.

"This simple, rapid, and elegant technology offers the potential to transform the diagnostics landscape by transitioning critical tests from the centralized lab directly into the hands of the physician," Michael J. Magliochetti, Claros chief executive, said in a statement.

The Series A financing round was led by Oxford Bioscience Partners, a life science venture capital firm with offices in Boston, Claros said.
