Zoll Medical Corp. has gotten an OK to sell a new type of defibrillators.

Designed specifically for paramedics, these new units give users feedback on their performance of CPR to heart attack victims.

The Chelmsford company, which makes resuscitation devices, said today it has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to market and sell the Zoll E Series defibrillator with Real CPR Help technology, which allows rescuers to see and hear instantly how well they are performing the rate and depth of CPR chest compressions.

Rival defibrillators merely tell rescuers to start CPR at the appropriate moment during a resuscitation attempt, noted Zoll chief executive Richard A. Packer in a statement. But "Zoll's Real CPR Help technology can provide rescuers with assistance beyond merely prompting them to start CPR so they are better equipped to improve their CPR performance and help cardiac arrest patients when it matters most."
