Nearly one in five small business managers read work-related e-mails and other documents while in the bathroom, and 49 percent say they work while driving, according to a new survey commissioned by Staples Inc., the office-supply retailer with headquarters in Framingham.

On its behalf, Staples said a research firm conducted telephone interviews with a random sample of 300 US business owners and executives of firms with no more than 20 employees, an important customer segment for Staples.

Almost half of US small business managers work during time meant for family, the survey showed.

"Time is a critical resource for companies of all sizes, but it's of even greater importance to small business managers who possess a larger stake in their company's success and often lack the support infrastructure of bigger companies," John Giusti, a Staples vice president, said in a statement.
