Avici Systems Inc. formed a new business unit called Soapstone Networks.
Avici is a Billerica provider of purpose-built carrier-class routing systems for the Internet, and the company said its Soapstone Networks solution is designed to enable carriers to bring orderly, predictable business-driven behavior to networks, regardless of vendor or technology composition.
"Soapstone represents a significant step forward for the industry," Avici chief executive William Leighton said in a statement. "Avici is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this opportunity by leveraging our experience in carrier networks."
