Lost? Slide home with Curt Schilling

First, there were celebrity greetings on cell phones; now lost motorists can get directions from Curt Schilling on their vehicle navigation systems.

TomTom Inc., a navigation solution provider with offices in Concord, said today that it is offering 70 preloaded voices in 36 languages that owners of its portable navigation systems can purchase and download.

Besides Red Sox star Schilling, TomTom customers can opt for navigational tips from the likes of actors Burt Reynolds, Dennis Hopper, and the incomparable Mr. T. ("Turn right, fool!")

"We know our customers have a very personal connection with TomTom," company president Jocelyn Vigreux said in a statement. "Now with the recognizable voice of Curt Schilling, the journey becomes more enjoyable and fun. Similar to ring tones on cell phones, drivers are most interested in hearing navigation directions from a voice that matches their mood, personality, or interest."

For a TomTom-equipped motorist driving to Fenway Park, the company said it's come up with a new wrinkle; instead of hearing Schilling say, "You have reached your destination," the Schilling voice-over is programmed to say: "You're almost home! Slide! Slide!"
