New editor at the Phoenix

The Boston Phoenix today named a veteran New York journalist as the editor of the alternative newspaper.

Lance Gould, 41, a former deputy manager of the New York Daily News, former executive editor of Spy and Men's Fitness magazines, and contributor to wide variety of publications, succeeds Bill Jensen, who left the Phoenix last year after just a few months to become director of online operations for Village Voice Media, the Phoenix reported on its web site. Gould will start work in April.

Gould earned his bachelor's degree at Brandeis University in Waltham and a master's degree at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. Gould will report to Peter Kadzis, executive editor of Phoenix Media/Communications Group. In additon to the Boston Phoenix, Phoenix Media/Communications Group holdings include the Phoenix newspapers in Providence, R.I. and Portland, Maine; Stuff@Night magazine, FNX Radio Network; and Phoenix Interactive.
