Red Bend Software has signed a licensing agreement with Motorola Inc. that will result in Red Bend client software being used in some Motorola cellphones.

Red Bend of Waltham specializes in mobile software management and firmware over-the-air, or FOTA, updating solutions for mobile phones.

According to Red Bend, select new handsets utilizing Motorola's flexible Linux-Java platform together with Red Bend's software management solution will enable consumers to easily obtain some of the latest software and features for their phones over the air, versus making an inconvenient trip to a retail or a service center.

"FOTA offers unique personalization options for consumers and numerous business benefits and revenue opportunities for operators," Red Bend chief executive Yoram Salinger said in a statement.

Based in Illinois, Motorola provides integrated communications solutions, including software-enhanced wireless phones.
