Starbucks Corp. isn't the only company giving away free coffee today -- McDonald's Corp. is also dispensing complimentary caffeine.

Starbucks has said that its one-day March giveaway, an annual event, is its way to thank customers. But McDonald's has mounted its own extended campaign, aimed at bleary-eyed early-risers.

To help New Englanders adjust to the early switch to Daylight Saving Time, McDonald's on March 6 started offering free cups of coffee at participating local stores, between 5 and 7 a.m. The promotion will last through Memorial Day.

Locally, the fast-food chain serves Newman's Own Organics Blend, a variety specially prepared for McDonald's by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.(By Chris Reidy, Globe staff)
