Lawyer Slavitt's suspension reduced
Boston lawyer Evan M. Slavitt, whose license to practice law was suspended in September, has had his suspension reduced from one year to two months by the state's highest court.
The Supreme Judicial Court's order, issued Friday, will be followed by an opinion explaining its decision to reduce the sanction meted out by Board of Bar Overseers.
Slavitt, a former federal prosecutor who was a Republican candidate for attorney general in 2002, said he expects to return by week's end to his law firm, Bodoff & Slavitt, which has operated as Bodoff & Associates during his suspension.
"I'm pleased with the decision of the Supreme Judicial Court and I look forward to their opinion," he said.
The suspension stemmed from Slavitt having recommended a man for admission to the Massachusetts bar despite knowing he had once falsely claimed to be a lawyer licensed in California; Slavitt said he vouched for the man because he believed he had eventually been admitted to the bar. In fact the man was never admitted.
