Two area solar energy technology startups are among recipients of $168 million in federal funding 13 projects to develop new solar energy systems.

The two companies are GreenRay Inc. of Lincoln and Konarka Technologies Inc. of Lowell.

US Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman came to Konarka's Lowell offices yesterday to announce the funding. Konarka's group, which includes the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and University of Delaware, is expected to get $3.6 million over three years subject to meeting key research goals, Bodman said.

GreenRay is part of a large consortium, which includes Westborough utility holding company National Grid USA, expected to get $2.3 million over three years. Konarka will focus on developing solar electric-producing cells that can be incorporated into building products like roofing shingles and awnings, while GreenRay's group is working on a technology for simplifying the conversion of solar-generated electricity into a form that can flow directly into home appliances and lighting.
