The IRS has further extended the deadline for taxpayers in the Northeast affected by Monday’s storm. They now have until Thursday, April 26, to file.

The Internal Revenue Service said today that, after further assessing conditions across the region, it would extend the April 19 deadline by a week.

The IRS had given taxpayers directly affected by the storm an additional two days, from April 17 to April 19, to file their tax returns without incurring late-filing or late-payment penalties.

Power outages and public transportation problems made it impossible for some taxpayers and tax professionals to meet the April 17 deadline, the IRS said.

Taxpayers affected by the storm can mark their paper tax returns with the words ‘‘April 16 Storm.’’ Those who e-file should use their software’s ‘‘disaster’’ feature, if available.

Additional information, under ‘‘Frequently Asked Questions,’’ is available at the IRS website, IRS.gov.
