Military contractor Raytheon Co. on Wednesday submitted its bid for a $160 million U.S. Air Force contract to make systems that run satellites.

Northrop Grumman Corp. also said Wednesday it had submitted a bid for the contract to provide the Air Force with an ability to communicate with satellites in orbit.

Speaking at the National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Steve Bergjans, Northrop Grumman vice president and program manager for the GPS next-generation control segment project, said he hoped to learn who wins the contract in late August or early September.

Lockheed Martin Corp. also has submitted a bid.

The Air Force released its request for bids on the contract in February. It is expected to select two companies for the deal in August 2007.

The satellites, part of a system dubbed Global Positioning II and III, are intended to improve navigation by air, land and sea, and be more difficult for enemies of the U.S. military to disable.

This spring, Lockheed and Boeing Co. will compete for a multibillion-dollar contract to supply the Air Force with up to 32 new satellites. (AP)
