Tax protest planned for Tuesday
The activist group ACORN and some members of the General Assembly are planning a rally at 6 p.m. at South Station on Tuesday to drum up support for a measure that would double the amount of the deduction that taxpayers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit can receive from the state.
Currently, Massachusetts allows taxpayers who qualify for the credit on their federal taxes to also claim 15 percent of the amount of their federal deduction on their state tax forms.
State Reps. Jim Marzilli, Willie Mae Allen, and Robert Koczera have cosponsored a measure to increase that to 30 percent. The Earned Income Tax Credit is a federal program that allows a special deduction for workers with dependent children who make less than $35,000 per year.
Tuesday is the deadline for filing federal and state taxes.
