Dyax Corp. announced today that it has begun a trial for a treatment that aims to prevent blood loss during on-pump cardiothoracic surgery.

Dyax is a Cambridge company focused on advancing novel biotherapeutics for unmet medical needs.

The company said today that patient treatment has begun in the Phase 2 trial of DX-88, or ecallantide, in such surgeries as on-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery and heart-valve replacement or repair procedures.

The current Phase 2 trial is a 160-patient, randomized, placebo-controlled trial that will be conducted at 10 major US cardiac surgery centers, Dyax said.
