Momenta Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Cambridge said today that it has started a study to evaluate its lead novel drug candidate - a next-generation anti-coagulant for treating patients with heart ailments.

The anti-coagulant is M118, which the company describes as heparin drug that has been engineered through Momenta's proprietary technology to provide improved anticoagulant therapy to patients with acute coronary syndromes such as heart attacks and unstable angina.

Momenta said today that it has initiated dosing of its Phase 1 study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, bioavailability, and pharmacokinetics of a subcutaneous formulation of M118.
