The Rev. J. Donald Monan, S.J., chancellor of Boston College, received the first "Justice and Compassion Award" from Catholic Charities for his contributions to Boston civic life.
Catholic Charities is the social services agency of the Archdiocese of Boston; the agency seeks to help the poor, the working poor, children, immigrants, and refugees of all faiths.
Monan served 24 years as president of Boston College; he assumed the newly created post of chancellor in 1996, Catholic Charities said in its press release.
