Boston utility NStar said today it is offering its electricity customers a monitor that tracks energy use.

According to NStar, the $29.95 PowerCost Monitor connects to most residential electric meters and transmits electricity usage information to a handheld device inside the house; with this product, consumers can see how much electricity they're using in their home and what the hourly cost is at that time.

NStar noted that studies have shown that people who can see and understand their electricity usage with feedback technology were able to reduce consumption by up to 15 percent.

NStar transmits and delivers electricity and natural gas to 1.4 million customers in Eastern and Central Massachusetts.
