Brigham's Ice Cream agrees to sell to H.P. Hood

Brighamsvanwithoreo.jpg Brigham's Ice Cream Inc. of Arlington today announced it has agreed to sell its product lines to a subsidiary of HP Hood LLC "in a move that brings together two of the region's biggest and best-loved ice cream brands."

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Under the agreement, Lynnfield-based Hood will acquire the Brigham's 94-year-old brand name, all its products, proprietary flavors, and recipes.hoodicecr.jpg

In a separate transaction, Brigham's 28 retail outlets and restaurants will be sold to Baltimore-based Deal Metrics LLC. Terms of that transaction were not disclosed either.

About 40 employees at Brigham's ice cream facility will lose their jobs and receive separation pay, a Brigham's spokesman said. The roughly 100 employees at Brigham's 28 retail locations will continue under the new management, he added.

Lynne Bohan, a spokesperson for Hood, said in a statement: “Hood is pleased to welcome Brigham’s Ice Cream to our family, bringing together two of New England’s most beloved ice cream brands. Brigham’s Ice Cream, like Hood, has a strong heritage and passionate following among consumers—and we are delighted to have the opportunity to preserve the Brigham’s name and products. Hood’s primary focus will be on the strengths of the Brigham’s packaged ice cream business and preserving Brigham’s proprietary flavors and recipes.”

Last month, Brigham's confirmed that it had hired an investment banking firm to explore a possible sale or merger of the company.

At that time, Brigham's cited tough competition and the rising costs of ice-cream ingredients as among the reasons for its decision to explore its options.

In a statement issued last month, Brigham's said, "Like other independent premium ice cream brands, Brigham’s has been subject to a variety of market pressures, including the unprecedented rise in the cost of commodities and the price of fuel and utilities."

Brigham's also said in that statement that it faced "heavy competition from a highly consolidated industry that, unlike Brigham's, has not been committed to quality," but has made "huge investments in technological innovation, packaging changes, promotional discounting, and cost-cutting."

  1. Is it only coincidence that the Brigham's I buy has had less ice cream and more air in the packages since the sale to Hood? I'm so disappointed.

  1. We are from Hingham, MA originally and now live in PA. Every time we come "home", we pack a cooler full of Brigham's Ice Cream and bring it "home" to PA. It's such a treat! We were back in Hingham in December and looked for our favorite holiday flavor - Frozen Pudding. We looked at several grocery stores and finally went to the Brigham's store in Hingham square. NO FROZEN PUDDING! As a matter of fact, the store had only about 10 varieties! No Mocha Almond either. It's a travesty when an Iconic business with such a long standing tradition of being the best, is purchased by a business that has no loyalty to that heritage. The recipes that were purchased by Hood are certainly not what is being packaged under the Brigham's name now. It is a very sad day for New England ice cream lovers. No need to bring our cooler when we visit next time.

  1. I can only repeat the concern of other writers - have looked for Frozen Pudding each season - often. Whwere is it? Are you not making it any longer.
ZFrankly I regret your merger with Hood - use supplement in their cows which is why I no longer buy their products- Must I now give up Brighams as well?

  1. The price went up and the quality went down. Hood is disgusting, cheap creamless ice and now so is Brighams. Haagen Daas is much better.

  1. I moved to VA, and have been looking for Brigham's frozen pudding everywhere. Wish they sell it down here. We are a big fan of it.
