Eons eliminates eight jobs

Eons Inc., the Boston company that operates an online social network for baby boomers, said that it eliminated eight positions earlier this week, bringing its head count to about 25 full-time workers.

Asked whether any top executives had lost their jobs in the cut, an Eons spokesman replied by e-mail that it is not company policy to comment on individual employees.

Eons is the brainchild of Jeff Taylor, who also created Monster.com, the job-search website.

On its website, in response to the question of "What is Eons?", the company answered in this way: "It’s the beat of our generation of boomers—many of us at Eons included—who are lovin’ life on the flip side. Eons.com is the online community for 'BOOMers,' those of us born between 1946 and 1964 and beyond, who want to learn and do more to make the most of every stage of life. Our community is the place for you to explore your passions and interests, keep in touch with friends and family, connect with interesting people to share life experiences, and most of all—have fun!"

Eons is no stranger to head-count down-sizing; in September 2007, the Globe reported that the company had laid off two dozen employees, more than a third of its headquarters staffs, in its second cutback of the year to date.

In an e-mail addressing this week's actions, an Eons spokesman wrote: “Eons is expanding its boomer footprint, and the company reallocated some resources. On Monday, Eons eliminated eight positions and is in the process of five new hires to support emerging boomer business opportunities."
