Millipore Corp., a Billerica company that provides technologies, tools, and services to the life sciences industry, said today that it opened a membrane casting manufacturing facility in County Cork, Ireland.

At 30,000 square feet, the $83 million facility almost doubles the company's membrane production capabilities in Ireland, Millipore said. The membranes are used in a wide range of Millipore products requiring precise filtration and purification.

"Millipore is celebrating 20 years in Cork," Millipore chairman, president, and chief executive Martin Madaus said in a statement. "Since 1988, our Cork operation has grown from the ground up into a Millipore Manufacturing Center of Excellence employing more than 580 people."
