Boston hockey fans will be crestfallen to learn that Bruins gear ranks only ninth in sales popularity at the NHL Store Powered by Reebok in New York City.

The fact that New Yorkers might sniff at hockey haberdashery tastefully festooned with the Bruins' iconic spoked-B logo hardly seems news.

But the second most popular team by sales, after the hometown New York Rangers, is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Even the Philadelphia Flyers and the Toronto Maple Leafs surpass the Bruins in sales, not to mention the mighty Detroit Red Wings, said Reebok International Ltd., the Canton-based brand of athletic footwear and apparel.

When not cranking out sneakers and sweats, Reebok also outfits many a professional sports team.

The popularity of Penguins paraphernalia at the NHL/Reebok store may be explained by admiration of the phenomenal Sidney Crosby, the hockey superstar who plays in Pittsburgh.

With product-moving stars like Crosby, Reebok said it is expecting that the NHL Powered by Reebok store will more than double its projected sales figure for 2008.
