Embattled Beverly Hospital president and chief executive Stephen Laverty has resigned, the trustees of the hospital's parent organization, Northeast Health System Inc., said today.

Globe stories in recent days noted that Laverty's management style had come under fire from doctors and nurses and that Laverty's resignation was expected.

Today Northeast Health System's board of trustees announced that it has accepted Laverty's resignation.

The board also said it has appointed Henry J. Ramini, a 76-year-old medical doctor, to serve as interim chief executive while the system seeks a permanent successor.
